The Original Italian Pizza
About The Original Italian Pizza – Tyson Hill
Driving along Route 75 in Mifflintown, it’s easy to miss a few small local gems unless someone points them out. One place that keeps coming up in conversations, local recommendations, and community reviews is The Original Italian Pizza – Tyson Hill at 27171 Rte 75 N, Mifflintown, PA 17059. From the outside it looks like a classic neighborhood pizzeria, but once you step in, the aroma of freshly baked dough and simmering tomato sauce quickly tells you that this place takes its food seriously.
After visiting a few times while exploring restaurants around Juniata County, I noticed something consistent: customers tend to return for the same dishes again and again. The pizza is the obvious highlight. The crust strikes a balance between crisp and chewy, something that many pizza specialists—including researchers cited by the American Institute of Baking—say is essential for a satisfying texture. Watching the kitchen staff prepare orders behind the counter, you can see the dough being stretched by hand before it hits the oven, a simple process but one that makes a noticeable difference in flavor and structure.
The menu extends far beyond pizza, which is part of why the restaurant attracts families and travelers passing through the area. Alongside traditional cheese and pepperoni pies, there are loaded specialty pizzas, hearty hoagies, baked pasta dishes, and comfort favorites like chicken parmesan and stromboli. During one visit, I tried a classic Italian sub paired with a slice of their house pizza. The bread had that slightly toasted exterior while staying soft inside, and the balance of meats, cheese, and dressing felt generous without being overwhelming.
Local diners often mention the portion sizes in their reviews, and it’s easy to understand why. Many plates arrive big enough to share, especially the pasta dishes. A nearby table ordered baked ziti, and the server set down a bubbling dish covered in melted mozzarella. According to hospitality studies published by the National Restaurant Association, generous portions and consistent quality are among the top reasons customers return to independent restaurants, and this spot seems to embody both.
Location also plays a role in its popularity. Sitting just outside the center of Mifflintown, the restaurant is convenient for both locals and travelers moving through central Pennsylvania. It’s the kind of place where construction workers stop for lunch, families gather for casual dinners, and road-trippers take a break from the highway. The relaxed environment adds to the experience; there’s nothing overly polished about it, just friendly service and the steady rhythm of a busy kitchen.
Information about hours or menu changes can occasionally vary depending on the season or local demand, so checking recent customer reviews or calling ahead can be helpful. Still, judging from the steady stream of regulars and the strong reputation built through word of mouth, this pizzeria has clearly secured its place as one of the familiar dining stops in the Mifflintown area.

Imagine you’re hungry, it’s your birthday and you also don’t want to cook. You decide to ask what your kiddo wants for dinner. She asks for a Hawaiian pizza and how could you say no to a kid who actually just chose something instead of saying “I don’t know”. Now imagine you get home with said pizza after picking it up only to discover you have to cook anyways because the pizza is raw 🙃
Kid is now upset they have to wait even longer and I’m irritated that a simple job of making sure a pizza was actually cooked before it left the establishment couldn’t be done..
Did I learn my lesson and will never be ordering from here again? Absolutely because this hasn’t been my first experience with food that hasn’t been fully cooked from here, I was just hoping for the best 🤦🏻♀️

We stopped by to dine in with a pizza and drinks. The store was clean, the service was friendly and fast. However, we were both disappointed with the pizza as we both agreed they were really short on the amount of pepperoni for the price and the overall taste of the pizza was just okay. The bottom dough was chewy. It was done, but It’s the only way to describe it. I would consider dining with them again when we are camping at buttonwood. But we wouldn’t order pizza.

I was craving a turkey sub. Normally they’re very good from here but tonight was not like normal. I paid $11 for a sub that had 4 thin, I mean very very thin, slices of meat on the entire sub. It was absolutely not worth $11.
